Sophie Grace Nelson Fundraiser

Fri, Nov 07 2008

The purpose of this fundraiser is to raise awareness of her condition and help her in obtaining a new liver. She was born with Biliary At r e s i a a n d Si t u s I n v e r s u s , compounded by twisted intestines and multiple spleens. Currently, she has fought through the surgery to fix her intestines, correct her liver, and have her gallbladder and appendix removed. Unfortunately, the liver operation (Kasai) that was needed to prolong her liver did not work and she needs a liver transplant to survive past 18 months. Please read her story and meet the doctors and nurses helping her at Georgetown University "Children's Organ Transplant Center."

On August 18 the newest addition to the Yorkshire fleet was placed in service. After several delays with equipment vendors the new equipment arrived and Chief Craig Griffith along with John Macinnis were able to start mounting tools and installing the radios. While they were doing their thing the rest of the membership all chipped in and started painting, marking, racking hose and cleaning tools from the old pumper that were needed for the new piece.

YVFD Brings Home Best Overall at 1st Annual FFNFFD

Sun, Jun 08 2008

The 1st Annual FireFighters of NOVA Family Fun Day was put together by Dumfries-Triangle VFD with the help of many sponsors. It was a great, fun-filled day of camaraderie and friendly competition between departments. There were teams from Prince William and Stafford Counties representing their departments. The team from YVFD consisted of Chris Stewart, David Markell, Mike Kosar, Danny Drake, and Chris Drake. These members practiced together leading up to the event and their hard work paid off in the end. The team brought home 1st place in the Hose Relay, Midnight Alarm, and Bucket Brigade events as well as a 3rd place finish in the Stretcher Relay. All of their efforts led to winning Best Overall and bringing home the brass parade ax that the winner will hold on to each year. We will proudly display the ax for the coming year and be back for the 2nd Annual FFNFFD to defend our right to bring it back home for another year! A big thanks to all of the people that worked hard to make this event happen!

Another Fire in the Park

Tue, Feb 26 2008

Around 0350hrs, as members were preparing to head to bed, Manassas Park Communications alerted Company 509 for a report of a house on fire at 213 Cabbel Drive. Engine 508's crew then hit the road heading towards Cabbel Drive. As all units were enroute to the fire, a Manassas Park PD unit came across the Fire Dispatch Channel and advised that there was “Smoke and Fire Showing from Side B.” Engine 508 then informed Prince William County Communications that they were responding to a report of a working fire in Manassas Park. Engine and Quint 509 arrived on scene to find “Fire Showing from Side B in the Basement.” Engine 509 crew then pulled a hand line to Side B and began hitting the fire. Engine 508 arrived on scene behind Company 509 and established a water supply to Engine 509. Engine 508's crew then pulled a back up line to the front and prepared to make entry. Engine 508's crew was met with heavy fire conditions as they made their way into the house. Shortly thereafter, as Engine 508's crew was getting a good knock on the fire, Command called for an emergency evacuation due to a floor collapse in the Alpha / Bravo quadrant. All crews then began defensive operations. Once the fire was knocked back and the extent of the floor collapse was evaluated, crews were allowed back into the structure to knock down the rest of the fire. Engine 508 then sent two of their crew members to assist Foam Engine 501's crew with opening up on the first floor, while the remaining three crew members were sent to the basement to begin hitting hot spots. Engine 508 was relieved by career staff on Engine 508B around 0700hrs. Congratulations to Chris Stewart on his first fire!
